Influenced by progressive rock, rock/blues, improv, and world music, this seven-piece upbeat ensemble packs one of the biggest sounds around. Original music at its finest, The Response began as a creative group of life-long musicians who were friends and neighbors in and around Carlisle. The band’s unusual instrumentation (including some experimental instruments built by band members) and diverse musicality couple with highly energetic performances, danceable rhythms, multiple horns, harmony vocals, and original compositions — all served up with a nod to the smarter art rock of the 70s and 80s.
The core of the band¹s music germinates through Jic Davis and the hypnotic sound of his “batar” (an electric guitar/bass hybrid instrument). Using a combination of tapping and strumming techniques, this instrument weaves a web of root-rumbling lows and sparkling highs. Vocalist Emilie Faucher fronts the band with authenticity, powerful poetic lyrics, and a magnetic open-hearted energy. Mac Ritchey brings an unusual instrument to the mix, the electric oud. This modern imagining of the ancient Arabic lute is routed through guitar pedals, effects, and a looping device, creating synthesizer-like textures and sonic atmospheres. Percussionist Jon Golden anchors the quintet with a rock steady groove and stylistic versatility, while guitarist George Middleton¹s melodic playing and colorful support are a perfect match for this song-driven ensemble.

ABOUT SANCTUARY, MAYNARD
We’re pretty darned excited to have found a great performance space with which to partner starting this fall. Sanctuary, a new event venue located in downtown Maynard, is bringing new life to an historic landmark. The space is located in a totally renovated 165-year-old church, complete with high ceilings, stained glass windows, and enormous wooden dance floor, providing a distinctive, elegant setting for performances and community events of all types. With a full lounge and stage with theatrical and nightclub lighting, Sanctuary provides an experience unique to the area. A full-service restaurant will be opening early next year. For now, Sanctuary provides a few take-out menus for local restaurants. You can order food online or by phone and it’ll be delivered to your table.
