Kemp Harris & Friends

  • Orange Door Kitchen 251 Arlington Street Acton, MA, 01720 United States (map)

Kemp Harris is a composer, musician, children’s author, actor, and teacher. Born in North Carolina, Kemp taught himself piano and was writing songs at age 14.

This summer his band was the featured act at Beat Brasserie in Harvard Square, sponsored by AirBNB. It was a captivating, soulful display of what Kemp does best — completely engage his audience from his first note to the last.

As a musician and composer, Kemp has shared the stage with Taj Mahal, Gil Scott-Heron, and blues artist, Koko Taylor. He wrote and performed “If Loneliness Was Black” for The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Complexions. He has also composed for Phase One Contemporary Dance in Atlanta.

Kemp’s CD, “Sometimes In Bad Weather,” has been called a "thoughtful tapestry exploring the intersection of American roots music, jazz, and African folk influences." Kemp’s second CD, “Edenton,” is a blues inspired journey, featuring the Holmes Brothers providing additional vocals.

Kemp also composed the ending credits soundtrack for “An Unreasonable Man,” a documentary about the life and career of Ralph Nader. The song “Stand Up, Rise Up” is the theme for Ralph Nader’s weekly talk show.

This is the second of our seven Wednesday night fall series "Fugitive at the Door" at Orange Door Kitchen in West Acton where we present “listening” music — one to a few performers playing jazz, folk, bluegrass, blues, classical, world music — and more.

Orange Door owners Meredith and Chris Powell have created a lovely, inviting, and intimate setting in the space that was formerly Savory Lane and The Local Table. It is totally transformed. It feels like a comfy living room/kitchen. And they are very welcoming hosts.

Chris and Meredith will be serving a few small plates and snacks each evening and providing a full bar including some excellent wine offerings.

Orange Door is a no cash, no tipping venue — all transactions are digital and gratuities are included in the menu price.
